What A House Fire Taught Me

Sep 11, 2026

I want to tell you about the day I learned this, because I think you already know it too, even if you've never called it what it is.

My house burned down on my wedding day. I'm not telling you that for sympathy, and the day itself was never really the point. I'm telling you because of what happened after.

I rebuilt that house room by room, in order, whether I wanted to or not. The foundation went first, no matter how badly I wanted to skip straight to the parts people would actually see. Drywall needs a foundation that's already cured. Every layer waits for the one underneath it, whether you're impatient for it or not.

Somewhere in that process, I recognized something that had nothing to do with the house.

I was trying to heal the exact same way you've probably already tried to change. From the outside in. A new habit here. A little more discipline forced into a week that already felt like it was buckling under everything you were carrying. And it didn't hold, not because you weren't trying hard enough, but because you were starting in the wrong room.

If you've ever changed your behavior, watched it work for a while, and then quietly watched it fall apart, I want you to hear this clearly. That wasn't a discipline problem. That was an order problem.

Your body has to feel safe before your mind can actually believe something different. Your mind has to believe something different before your behavior has anywhere real to stand. Skip a step, and the new habit is just standing on a foundation that was never poured.

I'm not here to hand you a fix today. I want you to notice something instead. The next time you try to change something and it doesn't stick, don't ask what's wrong with your willpower. Ask which room you started in.

You already know how to rebuild. You just started in the wrong place.
